Workout Muse Shares The Top 10 Greatest Workout Songs of All Time!

The other day Topher and I were chatting about a great new idea we have for Workout Muse.

Actually, the whole conversation started when we were discussing what my favorite workout music was.

Here’s my personal top 10 workout tunes list, in no particular order:

1.) Man in the Mirror, Michael Jackson

2.) Killing in the Name of, Renegades of Funk

3.) Juicy, Notorious BIG

4.) Anything from The Rocky Soundtrack (eye of the tiger, gonna fly now, any Vince Dicola produced training montage)

5.) Numb Encore, Jay-Z and Lincoln Park

6.) Momma Said Knock You Out, LL Cool J

7.) Crawling, Lincoln Park

8.) Anything from the 300 Soundtrack

9.) Carmina Burina

10.) Bombs Over Baghdad, Outkast

Now, music is like politics and religion- everybody has different tastes.

Heck, I am sure some of you are ripping on my list right now, especially the Michael Jackson song, ha!

So here’s what got Topher and I all jacked up…

We’re going to purchase reproduction rights for the top 10 workout songs of all time to infuse into our lists favorite interval training template. For example, think your favorite workout music mixed to the tabatas interval timeline!

It will be a special limited edition CD that will take your interval training workouts to the next level!

But first we need your help:

Please take the time to comment to this blog post and post your own personal top 10 workout songs AND your favorite interval training template/workout (e.g. tabatas, 30-30s, 2 mins on/2 mins off, etc.).

Remember, we’re going to be making whatever the majority of our list wants, so be sure to post your preferences baby and have some fun with it ;)

Crank it!

BJ

PS- Is anybody interested in an ALL ROCKY INTERVAL SOUNDTRACK? I would love this, but I wasn’t sure who else was interested??? Let us know by posting below!

I’d need more time to think about my list but it’s so cool that you mentioned Vince Dicola by name. It’s nice to see him get some recognition. My sister is a friend of his and his wife; they all went to school together.

  4. Lisa says:

    Top Ten Workout Songs

OK BJ, I’ll agree with you on the Rocky soundtracks, and I’ll even go along with you on the Michael Jackson, but as a 48 year old guy, I haven’t even heard of the others you listed. Ha Ha

  8. Jenny says:

I want the Rocky soundtrack for intervals. Call me a dork but it gets me motivated every time.

  9. Stephen Holt says:

Hey, BJ, even an old guy like me knows it’s “Linkin” Park :-)

How ’bout some vintage AC/DC for my generation? – Stephen

  10. Topher says:

    My current ten:

    1. Rage Against The Machine – Snake Charmer
    2. Nine Inch Nails – Wish
    3. Rocket From The Crypt – White Belt
    4. Sage Francis – Ground Control
    5. EL-P – Deep Space 9mm

    7. Red Hot Chili Peppers – Magic Johnson
    8. Trans Am – Total Information Awareness
    9. Santogold – Creator
    10. Bjork – Pluto

This is not a “top 10 of all time” but more of a current list for me.
    Honorable mention: Workout Muse!

  11. Jen says:

I had a spinning instructor once who played the White Stripes all the time, and it really got me going.

    My list would probably be:

    1. War Within a Breath, Rage Against the Machine
    2. Testify, Rage Against the Machine
    3. Seven Nation Army, White Stripes
    4. The Hardest Button to Button, White Stripes
    5. Come to Daddy, Aphex Twin
    6. Deceptacon, Le Tigre
    7. Around the World, Daft Punk
    8. Boyz, M.I.A
    9. Bamboo Banga, M.I.A.
    10. Purple Haze, Jimi Hendrix

  12. Coleen Barnes says:

BJ- Super idea! I do not have a personal list but I would LOVE more options done with this type of music. I especially like a variety of workout options…say 30 sec on 30 sec off, 50 sec on 10 sec off, etc and I don’t have enough options/variety for doing my workouts when I am not at boot camp. Can’t wait for this new product!! I’m in!!!!

  13. maru says:

First I want to comment on BJs selection–with the exception of Orf’s Carmina Burana I could not work out to any of those songs, and I can’t see myself working out to O Fortuna as much as I love it (maybe the techno mix tho’).
But as you said music is very personal. My playlists on my ipod are always
    being tweaked and updated.

For me a playlist depends on what am I doing–cardio, running, walking,
etc. Having said that my current playlist is something like this:

    1. Freedom90, Robbie Williams
    2. When I Get My Name in Lights, from The Boy from Oz
    3. Big Girl, Mika
    4. Everthing Old is New Again
    5. I Go to Rio
    6. 4 Minutes, Madonna
    7. All These Things That I Have Done, The Killers
    8. The Nicest Kids in Town, from Hairspray
    9. Money Success, Fame, Glamour (Remix) Felix da Housecat
    10. Guilt is a Useless Emotion, New Order

  14. The Captain says:

“Killing in the Name of” is by Rage Against The Machine. Renegades OF Funk is another song that they do. Also, there are a lot of objectionable lyrics in that song.

  15. Gail says:

    Love the Rocky Concept.
I make “run” Mixes or workout mixes all the time.
I’m new to this site- and am on my 3rd week of the workouts…..Lovin’ it! Just got stopped at work: “”You look GREAT. Have you lost weight?” :)

    My recent list:
Let’s Get it Started : blacky eyed peas
    Respect: Aretha Franklin
    Heartburn: Alicia Keys
It’s Raining Men: Geri Halliwell ( sorry guys)
    Scotch and Chocolate: Nickel Creek
Lucretia Mac Evil: Blood, Sweat and Tears
My give a Danm’s Busted: Jo Dee Messina

  16. Cindy A. says:

I like Patty LaBelle’s New Attitude especially for ab work and Robert Palmer Simply Irrisistable.

  17. bjgaddour says:

    Hey Captain,

you are right, my bad! I knew it was rage against the machine, I slipped and combined both songs into one, testify is also great…

but YES… highly questionable lyrics ;)

    BJ

  18. bjgaddour says:

Gail, congrats on the weight loss baby!

    Rocky is my favorite ;)

    BJ

  19. bjgaddour says:

    Greg, Stephen, and Bob,

Honored to have amazing fitness pros like yourselves posting on our new blog!

I like the vintage too baby ;)

We’re most likely going to do top 10 songs for each genre in the future after this first top 10 eclectic mix, so everyone will get what they want eventually ;)

    crank it!

    BJ

  20. Cindy A. says:

Cool down…Audra Mae’s acapela version of Forever Young

  21. Rosanne Clemente says:

    Hi There!

Great Choices!!!! Yesssssssssssssss, you have my vote on the Rocky soundtrack!!

Also, when I train the “Jersey girl” in me comes out, so any house remixes are always fun to get the blood flowing. Also some hardcore old skool – 9 inch nails, metallica etc. Paramore has some great ones as well. Even old school Pat Benatar has made it to my mix…haha. I guess my training mix is kinda bipolar…heehee. Just wanted to quickly add my .02…back later w/ names/artists (I’m terrible w/ remembering the correct info)…only have a second CRAZY day at work.

Keep up the AWESOME work guys…you are the best!!!

  22. james says:

You gotta have Motley Crue kick start my heart on this list!!!! Love the list you put up and this is a great idea! Thanks!

  27. Mary Anne says:

I like the idea of music, but think a general “top” 10 is impossible. Rocky, yes, but I am 46 and didn’t know any other the other songs you listed or most of the others on the blog. Is there anyway to personalize? What if you’re a country fan or into jazz?

  28. Big Mike says:

Nice topic. I currently have several Billy Idol tunes on my workout playlist – everything from LA Woman to John Wayne to Cradle of Love. Also Hard Sun by Pearl Jam, Real World by Matchbox Twenty, American Woman by Lenny Kravitz, Beat It by Fall Out Boy, You Get What You Give by the New Radicals, Fast Car by Wyclef Jean, The Emporer’s New Clothes by Sinead, Blue Sky by Allman Brothers, Show You How by Lindsay Buckingham.

Rocky would be cool, and I’d really prefer the 50/10 interval.

    Peace.

    2)Pearl Jam: Worldwide Suicide
