BJ’s Favorite Things- Fitness Equipment

Monday, October 4th, 2010

I’m gonna steal a theme from Oprah this week and share my favorite things when it comes to the fitness industry.

Today I’m gonna start us out by revealing:

a.) my favorite fitness equipment

b.) where’s the best place to get it

c.) who are the best people to learn from to use these tools safely and effectively

Every training tool has it’s own set of pros and cons, so here it goes:

#1- Resistance Bands

Pros:

  • Portable, affordable and versatile
  • Space-efficient
  • Provides the missing upper body pulling component
  • Great for cardio/locomotion and speed training
  • Great for flexibility work
  • Ideal for partner training
  • Easy sell to campers as an affiliate for home/travel workouts

Cons:

  • Wear and tear from poor quality bands and improper use
  • Lack of “dead weight” training

Recommendations:

I go with Dave “The Band Man” Schmitz. He’s hands down the best in the biz when it comes to safely and effectively using resistance bands for a wide variety of applications.

He also has his very own line of bands which I have personally found to be of great quality.

I started purchasing bands from Dave about 3-4 years ago and they continue to hold up very well. I can honestly say that we’ve never had a band snap on us… knock on wood ;)

In fact, I love bands so much that we collaborated with the band man to make some custom Workout Muse interval training workout music soundtracks using bands called RESISTANCE BAND TRAINING SOUNDTRACKS (click the image below for more info):

On a side note, Dave is an outstanding coach, a great family man, and one of my best friends on Earth. You can’t go wrong when it comes to the band man and I mean that from the bottom of my heart!

#2- Kettlebells

Pros:

  • A gym in your hand
  • Hardcore tool that builds and attracts fitness fanatics
  • Perfect tool for total body exercises and metabolic conditioning
  • Great for kettlebell-specific profit centers
  • Ideal tool for power training and posterior chain development

Cons:

  • High up-front cost
  • Heavy and not as portable

Recommendations:

When it comes to education, I go with Pamela MacElree and Jason C. Brown of KettlebellAthletics.com.

They are both awesome people and I just can’t say enough about their teaching methods.

Since going through their Level I Kettlebell Athletics Certifcation in September of 2009, I have become absolutely obsessed with kettlebell training and we even developed a Workout Muse product featuring custom kettlebell interval workout music soundtracks called KETTLEBELL KAOS (click the image below for more info):

I use all of the KK tracks in my very own Kettlebell Kaos group ex class and my clients absolutely love them.

I also purchase my kettlebells from Perform Better (see more info below).

#3- Suspension Trainers

Pros:

  • Portable and versatile
  • The most seamless way to regress and progress bodyweight exercises
  • Provides the missing upper body pulling component
  • Ideal for core training and the general population loves to work their abs
  • Perfect for TRX-specific profit centers
  • Great for flexibility and mobility work
  • Promote as an affiliate for home/travel workouts

Cons:

  • High up-front cost
  • Attachment limitations

Recommendations:

I go with TRX Suspension Trainers from Fitness Anywhere. The straps are high quality and my campers love them. Plus, Fitness Anywhere provides an incredible educational component for how to best use their suspension trainers and to me, education is what it’s all about.

Workout Muse Featured at The Perform Better Summit in Chicago

Thursday, June 18th, 2009

This past weekend in Chicago I was at The Perform Better Training Summit in Chicago.

Perform Better is without a doubt the fitness industry’s best platform for continuing education and each event truly has that family feel to it that makes you want to keep coming back.

It was really awesome to learn from all of the industry’s best minds… but it was even more awesome to see how much Workout Muse was on display!

Check out the video below of Coach Robert dos Remedios, 2006 NSCA Strength and Conditioning Coach of the Year and Author of Men’s Health Power Training, doing a killer 4-minute 15-15 tabata finisher to end his hands-on presentation:

Hear what Coach Dos has to say about Workout Muse and the exciting projects we have coming up for his new book Men’s Health Metabolic Training:

My buddy Jason C. Brown, the world’s leading kettlebell expert and owner of Kettlebell Athletics, cranked out a 40-20 metabolic finisher during his hands-on presentation using the Workout Muse 40-20 MMA soundtrack:

Plus, I was honored to run a surprise lunch workout featuring BOOT CAMP DYNAMITE!

Here’s a video of the 50-10 five-exercise circuit workout:

And here’s a video of the 4-minute 20-10 tabatas finisher using body weight exercises only:

Lastly, I was honored to have 2 of the world’s leading fitness experts rave about Workout Muse!

Mike Boyle, the world’s most respected strength and conditioning coach, has been using various Workout Muse tracks with his elite athletes, including Boot Camp Dynamite. Hear what he has to say about it:

My good friend Brian Grasso, the world’s leading youth fitness expert and CEO of the IYCA, also had some very kind works about our company:

The Ultimate Saturday Workout

Friday, June 5th, 2009

One of the highlights this past weekend at The Fast Track to Fitness Millions conference in New Jersey was The Ultimate Saturday Workout featuring Boot Camp Dynamite.

To sum it up, there were 50 of the world’s top fitness professionals cranking it out 50-10 circuit style in a small hotel conference room with 30+ spectators in awe.

It was jam packed like a can of sardines in there, but we got ‘er done!

The event was sponsored by our friends at Prograde Nutrition, Polar, and Perform Better

Here was the workout that everybody that weekend was talking about:

50-10 Five-Exercise Circuit

1- Kettlebell Single-Leg Deadlifts

2- Valslide Slideout Variations

3- Climbing Push-up- Spiderman Style

4- Body Weight Push-ups Rows

5- Valslide Reverse Lunges

Check out what Ben Warstler and Donovan Owens, some of the top boot camp trainers in the world who flourishing 6-figure businesses, have to say about the new Boot Camp Dynamite powered by Workout Muse:

According to Jim Labadie, the founder of the Association for Professional Personal Trainers (APPT) “BJ has emerged as one of the brightest young stars in the fitness industry. He simply blew everyone away this weekend during his ‘Done-For-You Boot Camp Marketing Presentation’ and his ‘Ultimate Saturday Workout’ featuring his proprietary Workout Muse music interval training system for fitness boot camps. He was the talk of the event and his unmatched passion and desire to help others left everyone in the audience wanting more.”

The President of the APPT, Greg Justice, went on further saying: “I have been in this personal training business for 26 years, and BJ is one of the brightest minds I have ever come across- and he’s only 26 years old. BJ’s music interval training system for group exercise has simply revolutionized the fitness industry. I use it in our corporate fitness programs throughout the country and soon to be seen worldwide. It allows us to press play and work with more people per hour to better leverage our time and maximize profits- it literally helps a trainer make more and work less while helping more people. In the midst of the current obesity epidemic, BJ could not have stepped on the scene at a better time.”

We officially launch Boot Camp Dynamite this Tuesday at a very special limited-time introductory price with some killer fast action bonuses on that only last 24 hours.

So if you want to take advantage of this opportunity and join the emerging fitness revolution that is Workout Muse, look for an email from me Tuesday morning… you won’t be sorry ;)

PS- if you were at the LIVE ultimate saturday workout, first of all THANK YOU for coming. Second of all, please post here and let us know how you liked and how you felt the next 24-48 hours ;)
