what are good exercises to work the legs? Also you mention pushing and pulling should be balanced? What are the best exercises to do without equipment? I always do a few pressups in the morning before work, if I combine those with pullups would that suffice?

Hey BJ -
Greetings from Altoona, Iowa! You've mentioned working lower body before and backed it with some really good studies. I push lower exercises, and inform my students exactly what you stated above, and have stated before. More calories are burned through working your lowers than any other muscle group. We don't use weights only resistance bands, and my students get a really good work out with the lowers because you can't cheat your own body weight. With uppers you can slack off everything but those exercises that require you lifting your body weight. Ninety percent of the lower work-outs require lifting your own body weight, so there is less cop-outs in those work-outs.

Thanks for the blog, and I'll get my students in here to read this.
Keep cranking out the good pointers BJ!

Talk to ya soon,

Michael

great tip on the golfing... 4 hours of walking on a hilly terrain vs. 4 hours of sitting in a cart... should be a no brainer ;)

BJ,

Great post, I loved the pictures!

I completely agree with your point on working on your legs. Some of the biggest muscles in the body are down there so if you develop them than the fat will really start to come off. Plus its not the 1980's anymore, there's no need to train like a meat head.

Everyone should be training like an athlete and aiming to get lean and toned. How practical is 20 inch biceps with 16 inch calves?

One other suggestion for the fathers who love to golf (mine does). Take your father out golfing for fathers day, BUT leave the cart behind and walk! Not only is it great exercise, but you'll probably have some great conversations walking next to him!

I'm not a father, but I love this post! Thanks BJ!

My father, at 71, has taken up long(er) distance cycling this summer. He's riding 30-50 miles a few times/week. Go Dad!

He also lifts at the local Y and walks on their track. I'm very proud of the shape he's in! Happy Father's Day Dad!
